The Quiet Power of Showing Up for Yourself

Making time for yourself can sound like a luxury. For many women, it is often the first thing to fall away when life becomes busy. Work, caregiving, family life, household responsibilities, emotional labour, and the constant demands of modern living can leave very little room for pause.

And yet, making time for yourself is not indulgent. It is not selfish. It is not something to be earned only after everything else is done. In many ways, it is part of what allows women to keep going in a healthy, sustainable, and connected way.

At The Balance Project, we believe this deeply - and the evidence increasingly supports it too.

Research consistently shows that social connection is a powerful contributor to both mental and physical health, and that loneliness and social disconnection are linked with poorer wellbeing outcomes. Social relationships, belonging, and feeling meaningfully connected to others are not just “nice to have”; they are foundational to health.

That matters, because making time for yourself is often also about making time for connection. It may look like going for a walk with others, joining a swim, having a coffee and a conversation, or simply showing up in a space where you can be yourself without pressure. Those moments can seem small, but they can have a very real impact on stress levels, emotional regulation, and a sense of belonging.

There is also strong evidence that leisure-time physical activity is associated with better mental health and subjective wellbeing. Importantly, movement in this context is not only about fitness or performance; it is about carving out time for activities that restore, energise, and support you.

When that movement happens in nature, the benefits may be even greater. Emerging reviews on nature-based physical activity suggest it can support mental health and wellbeing, while evidence on blue spaces - places such as the sea, coastlines, and other water environments - points to benefits linked to restoration, social interaction, and overall wellbeing.

This is one of the reasons we care so much about creating opportunities for women to come together in real life. Because making time for yourself is rarely just about the hour itself. It can represent something much bigger.

It can represent permission.

Permission to step out of constant doing. Permission to reconnect with your body. Permission to laugh. Permission to breathe. Permission to remember that your wellbeing matters too.

For many women, that small decision - to sign up, to show up, to take an hour or two for themselves - can begin to shift something important. It can reduce stress. It can improve mood. It can create a sense of belonging. It can remind them that support, joy, and connection are still available to them, even in a very full season of life.

And perhaps most importantly, it can help women feel less alone.

At The Balance Project, we see time and again that when women come together, something powerful happens naturally. Conversations open up. Experiences are shared. Support is offered without fuss. Laughter comes easily. There is often no grand moment, and yet everyone leaves feeling lighter.

That is the quiet power of making time for yourself. It is not always dramatic, but it is often deeply impactful.

This is exactly why we are so excited about our next two free Balance Club community events.

On Friday evening, 4th September, we will be coming together for a Sea Swim with Ciara McKinley and Rituals Sauna Talk by HotBox - a chance to pause, reset, and enjoy the restorative power of movement, water, and shared experience.

Then on Wednesday morning, 30th September at 9.30am, we will be gathering for Brew and Belong at The Factory, Bolands Mill - a relaxed space for connection, conversation, and community hosted by Georgie & Helen.

Both events are free, and both are rooted in the same belief: that women deserve spaces where they can make time for themselves, connect with others, and support their wellbeing in ways that feel real, welcoming, and accessible.

If you have been meaning to take a little time for yourself, this is your invitation.

Sign up on our events page, come along, and join us - we would love to see you there x

Always with balance. Always with you.
